Crystal Lake & Beulah Michigan Events and Late-Summer Changes

August 20, 2026

Thursday nights in downtown Beulah looked the same this month as they have for years. Lawn chairs staked out early at the four corners of Benzie Boulevard and Commercial Street, the last band of the season taking the intersection at 7 p.m. sharp. That happened one week ago, on August 13, the final show in this year's Music in the Street run. Ten days ago, the shoreline near the Beulah boat launch filled with runners and their families for the Crystal Lake Team Marathon. Rock's Landing still has BBQ nights scheduled through the end of the month.

The familiar summer schedule continued, while the lake's water-quality programs saw a change.

The Season's Rhythm, Right on Time

Beulah runs its summer on a calendar residents could recite from memory. The Firecracker 5K falls on July 4, starting at Beulah Park and finishing at the Betsie Valley Trailhead. Music in the Street picks up on the last Thursday of June and runs through mid-August, always at 7 p.m., always at the same four corners. The Crystal Lake Team Marathon runs annually in August, with this year's race held on August 10, the course looping out from Beulah and back.

None of that moved this year. What's worth noticing is what's still running versus what already wrapped. Rock's Landing, the only restaurant sitting directly on Crystal Lake's water, keeps its Monday-night BBQ series going through August 31 on the lawn at Chimney Corners, a tradition that traces back to the building's original life as the resort's Beach Dining Room, built in the 1950s by Jim Rogers Sr. before it closed in 2014 and was reopened under new ownership. Tuesday through Saturday the dining room runs 5 to 9 p.m., and Sunday afternoons the lounge opens from 1 to 7 for wine and whiskey flights. Down South Benzie Boulevard, Five Shores Brewing keeps its taps running, and COGnition keeps its science exhibits open for anyone with kids to entertain on a rainy afternoon.

That's the visible layer of the season. It held.

Two Water-Quality Issues, Different State Responses

Alongside the event calendar, Crystal Lake faces two water-quality issues that drew different state responses this year.

The first is Eurasian watermilfoil, an invasive plant that showed up years ago and has been mapped by the Crystal Lake Watershed Association to roughly six acres out of the lake's nearly 9,854 total, most of it concentrated at the drop-off near the Beulah village boat launch, likely introduced by boats coming in from other infested lakes. This year marks the fifth consecutive season the association has treated it, using aerial drone guidance to target the herbicide application precisely enough to limit what spreads into the rest of the water. The state signed off. The treatment happened. The lake's watershed overlay zoning, the same special protection that put teeth behind a recent dispute over a lakeside development in Benzonia Township, gives the association standing to keep doing this work year over year.

The second problem is swimmer's itch, the skin reaction caused by parasites that normally cycle through waterfowl and occasionally land on a swimmer instead. For years the association's main tool against it was trapping and relocating merganser broods, the ducks that host the parasite, to water where the cycle can't complete. That program required a state permit. For summer 2026, the Michigan Department of Natural Resources did not renew it.

The state's permit decisions leave the lake's two water-quality programs on different footing this summer.

The watershed association continues to run its database of reported cases and brood sightings and coordinate with its contractor, Swimmer's Itch Solutions. Its research points to something worth knowing if you swim here regularly: the same data that explains what causes outbreaks also suggests 2026 is more likely than not to bring a resurgence in cases.

Water-Quality Updates Beyond the Event Calendar

The watershed association shares information about Crystal Lake's water-quality issues in its newsletter and on its website.

The music series and the marathon are visible parts of Crystal Lake's summer. For swimmers, the more immediate update is that the association is working without a tool it has relied on for years.

If you've had a case of swimmer's itch on this lake before, or you're the one who ends up checking kids' legs after they come in from the dock, this is worth tracking rather than assuming it's handled the way it was last August.

What's Still Ahead This Season

The Beulah calendar doesn't stop just because Music in the Street wrapped. A few dates worth having on hand:

  • Rock's Landing BBQ nights, Mondays through August 31, reservation only, up the hill from the restaurant on the Chimney Corners lawn.
  • Cold Creek Bridge Walk, Labor Day morning, September 7, 10 a.m., starting from the Crystal Lake shoreline at the boat launch side, with an Archibald Jones presentation tied to the local history of the canal project that shaped the lake's current shoreline.
  • Beulah Fall Festival, October 3, back in the village park with the soup contest and car show that have become as much a fixture as the summer marathon.
  • IRONMAN 70.3 Michigan, based out of Frankfort with a race day the organizer currently lists as September 20. Crystal Lake Township's board has granted the race permission to use township roads for both 2025 and 2026, but that permission comes up for reevaluation at year's end, and the board has been explicit that future approval depends on the race managing its impact on emergency access along the route. If you're near the course, it's worth checking the township's own updates closer to race weekend rather than assuming last year's road pattern holds.

The Takeaway for Anyone Who Actually Lives Here

The version of Crystal Lake that shows up in a summer guide is accurate as far as it goes. Beulah's four corners really do fill with lawn chairs every Thursday through mid-August. The marathon really does loop the lake each August. Rock's Landing really is the only restaurant where the water laps a few feet from your table.

Summer guides highlight events, while the watershed association's updates cover water-quality programs. This year, the watermilfoil treatment has state backing, while the permit for brood relocation in response to swimmer's itch was not renewed. The association's research suggests cases may resurge in 2026. These updates are worth knowing if this lake is where you spend your summer.
